I’ve gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in one of the world’s poorest nations. Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough.
Pay our educators a professional, livable wage.
We must compensate our educators for the important, life-changing work they do. COVID has made that even more apparent. I will fight to reallocate public funding so that teachers can live without working two (or more) jobs to support themselves.
Reduce excessive standardized testing.
America’s system of standardized testing is failing our students and teachers with its vicious cycle of over-testing. It doesn’t prepare students for success and it keeps disadvantaged communities chronically underfunded. I will make this a priority in Tallahassee.
I’d been inspired by the civil rights movement – by all the clear-eyed, straight-backed, courageous young people who’d boarded buses and traveled down South to march and sit at lunch counters, and lay down their lives in some cases for freedom.
